Whet your appetite for the Grand Canyon¿
If you are looking for a tasty sampling of writings about the Grand Canyon this may be your book. In its 253+ pages you get the flavor of writings by dozens of authors, and enough of each flavor for you to decide whether you've had enough with that one taste, or if you need to digest that author's entire work. The writings range from serious to the silly, from inspirational to scary, and from experiential to philosophical. There's probably something here for everyone - a vast variety of perspectives and experiences from canyon rim to beyond the river's edge. None of the selections are over 16 pages (and many far shorter) so even if you're less than delighted with any of them you're quickly on to the next. This is a surprisingly quick and delightful read, and you'll probably get to the end wishing for more.

This book is designed to give you enough interest in the Grand Canyon from an armchair perspective to induce you to actually go there. Accordingly there are 14 pages of information devoted to The Next Step - what you need to know to visit and safely enjoy the real Grand Canyon.

Read the book and then go!

The Granite Landscape: A Natural History of America's Mountain Domes, from Acadia to Yosemite
Published in Hardcover by Countryman Pr (June, 2001)
Authors: Tom Wessels and Brian D. Cohen
Average review score:

EXCELLANT !!!!
First off, I loved this book. I know some will poo poo this book for not being a hardcore geology book, but thats what makes it so good. Mr. Wessells gives a very good geology course limited to the granite outcroppings in the U.S. and he does it so that is is very interesting. At times I felt like I was right there at his side as he described the landscape he was in. I had to limit myself to a chapter a day, though I cheated a couple of times, I could have read it in one sitting. I sure wish my geo classes in college had been this interesting.
Brian Cohen's illustrations are fantastic as well.
My only disappointment was the author's photographs, though that can be forgiven fro writing such a good book. It is now a permanent part of my library.

Great Sand Dunes National Monument (True Books-National Parks)
Published in Paperback by Children's Book Press (March, 2000)
Author: David Petersen
Average review score:

Makes me want to visit the Dunes!
"Great Sand Dunes National Monument," by David Petersen, is part of the "A True Book" series. This volume is all about the Colorado attraction of the title. The book includes a map, a brief glossary, an index, a short list of books, and the online addresses of two Web sites.

The book combines an easy-to-read text with many full-color photos. Petersen describes how the Dunes were created: "Sand, water, wind, and time: These are the dune makers." Also discussed is the plant and animal life on and near the Dunes. Overall, a fascinating, educational book that makes me want to visit this national monument.
